Hello, am hoping someone might be able to help me please.
I have (or rather, I'm supposed to have) Realtek AC97 onboard sound
A week ago I lost my sound completely, also the little sound icon disappeared from my taskbar. I clicked on 'volume' in the control panel/sounds/audio & I got the message 'windows error SndVol32.exe'. This is fine now & I've got my volume icon back since downloading a new realtek driver but still no sound.
Have checked all obvious things in device manager, no exclamation marks etc and says 'device is working properly'.

I've run full system spyware, full virus check, registry fix, driver detective and still no sound.
Have made sure that nothing has been 'disabled' or ticked as 'mute' and now I'm completely out of ideas.
Someone else advised me to disable the Microsoft UAA Bus driver from systems (in devices) but I didn't have that in my systems devices.
I've also uninstalled the realtek driver then rebooted and let XP relocate it, still made no difference.

Kaz, I took a look at the Quick Start Guide for your system from HP's website. The speaker configuration starting on page 22 of the manual (p.48 in the PDF file) looks complicated. There is a multi-channel sound option where you use the inputs -- line in and microphone -- as outputs to speakers. There is also an extra jack on the back labeled 'speaker' that is apparently designed for the included speakers. Are you using any of this stuff?
What kind of speakers do you have? Your diagnostic procedure is pretty sound (heh, heh), but I will ask the obvious questions anyway. Have you verified that the speakers do work with some other audio device (e.g. an MP3 player)? Also, you could verify the audio cable that way.

Oh and also wanted to say that since writing my first 'help' message, I've been into BIOS and checked that Audio was set to 'enable'.
I did other bits in there too as advised by the online HP help thing - hitting F5 and then F10 and as a last resort, disabling power & holding in power switch for 20 seconds then reconnecting, go back to BIOS and do the F5/F10 thing again. I've STILL got no sound.......GRRRRRRR! :-)

If my onboard sound had developed a major fault, would there be any way of knowing this?
I'm thinking about buying and installing a PCI soundcard to replace the onboard one but am worried that I'll still have the same problem because I've not got to the bottom of what's causing the sound loss in the first place.

Kaz, another thing to try is some diagnostics. Start with the DirectX diags, which should be installed in your system. Open a run box (Win+R), enter dxdiag, and go to the Sound tab(s). Run the DirectSound tests and see if you get anything. Is there a RealTek Sound or Audio Manager on your system? I have a RealTek sound chip, too, and the software installed 'RealTek HD Audio Manager'.
In the worst-case scenario, the speaker jack is broken or the jack assembly has come loose from the motherboard. In such a situation, there would be no way for the system or any software diagnostics to discover this. You could try *gently* moving the jack with the plug while some audio is playing.
One more crazy test I though of. You could enable the multichannel sound, then try plugging your speakers into the other jacks, blue and pink, while playing back multi-channel sound, such as a DVD with 5.1 channel sound. If you get audio out of those jacks -- even surround or center channel audio -- it might suggest that the green jack is bad.
Update....I've done the dxdiag and run directSound Test. Asked me if I could hear sound (Grrrrrr) :-) Clicked 'no' and got the message 'Failure at step 19 (user verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) which I assume means because I confirmed that I couldn't hear sound, the test is telling me there is an error with the sound.
On my system there is RealTek AC97
Have tried the speaker jack in both blue and pink whilst on 5.1 - still absolute silence.

If you don't have the (Realtec Sound Manger Program) in the control panel, then in all probability you are missing Realtec sound drivers in the computer system for some reason.
That is why I ask in my second post in the thread if you had installed the drivers for the computer.
Did your computer come with a CD maybe??? with all drivers on it ??
Unlike a pre-built computer, a builder MB will come with a CD with all drivers on it to get the system going.
Let me search Realtec and other places to see if I can find a program to install which might??? get you going.

Hi Rick,
I have RealTek in my device manager list - doesn't this mean I have the driver that I need? I'm a bit confused now.
Also when things first went wrong I did download a driver from RealTek (that was what got rid of my SndVol32.exe error and gave me back my sound icon in the task bar below).
Since then, I've uninstalled the driver and let XP relocate it. It does without any problem and says it's working properly, so I'm a bit muddled now about downloading again.
I went to the page on your link and it took me to a list of stuff I didn't really understand....I'm not at all sure what to download now from that page.
Sorry if the above seems 'dim' but I'm not an expert (lol, as if you couldn't guess eh) and I'm learning (lots) as I'm going along.

Also, my PC didn't come with any disks at all. Everything was pre-loaded on in advance. I did make 'rescue disks' but the PC came with nothing.

Didn't mean to confuse you.
Was just looking at what appears different in your machine than mine since my board has an integrated sound chipset which runs Realtec sound also.
Of course my integrated sound chipset is different as this is a Asus mother board.
Again, was just looking at Realtec programs that might support your machine with its features.
Let me go back to Realtec and review everything once more.

Looking at the specs for your computer and matching them against a real Intel Board with an integrated sound system as close I can get, this Intel download might probably???? work?????. Don't know.
Again I don't want to confuse you with geek speak AND also don't want to hurt your computer in any way.
Unfortunately I'm in situation where I cannot recommend nor can I recommend this solution because if I break your your computer, I cannot fix it due to the fact I'm thousands of miles away.
I wish I did have a 'magic' solution but I don't. I only know what I would do if the computer were on my bench.

Kaz, do not use drivers or audio software from RealTek or Intel unless the ones from HP just don't work. Also, never use WDM drivers under XP unless there is no choice.
If there is a RealTek device under 'Sound, video, and game controllers' in Device Manager, then you do have some driver installed. What I was hoping to see is that you had some RealTek Sound Manager software installed in addition to the device drivers. Do you have something like that? It may not look exactly the same. Based on some of the comments that you made, I think you do have something like this, but maybe don't realize it comes from RealTek. From the pictures on HP's website, it looks like the Sound Effect Manager doesn't say 'RealTek' on it anywhere.
Another thing that I would like you to consider is reinstalling the whole RealTek software package, which should include the driver and Sound Effect Manager. After all of the fiddling around trying to make it work, it may have gotten wonky. Look in Add/Remove Programs and see if you have any packages that start with RealTek or Sound Effect. Be aware that RealTek makes other devices, such as network chips. Get the software from HP at this location which I reached by putting in the model of your system, Pavilion 734.uk and selecting software downloads:

I've done as you suggested and once again uninstalled the RealTek package from Add/Remove programmes then downloaded from your link. No sound yet though :-)
I'm sincerely sorry to end up being such a pain in the butt,:-( I don't think I can solve this without someone actually taking a look at it now. I just can't think of anything else to try

I think the Realtek Sound Manager calls itself RtHDVCpl.exe . It should show up as one of the running processes in the task manager.

After you upgrade your computer to Windows 10, if your Microsoft Sound / Audio Drivers are not working, you can fix the problem by updating the drivers. It is possible that your Sound / Audio driver is not compatible with the newer version of Windows.
Find Microsoft Sound / Audio Device Drivers by Model Name or Number
How to Update Device Drivers
There are two ways to update drivers.
Option 1 (Recommended): Update drivers automatically - Novice computer users can update drivers using trusted software in just a few mouse clicks. Automatic driver updates are fast, efficient and elimate all the guesswork. Your old drivers can even be backed up and restored in case any problems occur.

Option 2: Update drivers manually - Find the correct driver for your Sound / Audio and operating system, then install it by following the step by step instructions below. You’ll need some computer skills to use this method.
